In 1993, Pierre Semudenge-Mujene was born in Rwanda, where a civil war breaks out shortly after his birth. Genocide forces the Semudenge-Mujene family to flee the war-torn country. For nearly 7 years they live in refugee camps in politically unstable neighbouring countries, in search and hopes for a life in safety.

Finally, the family ends up in The Netherlands. ‘It rains, but I am not getting wet.’ This is what Pierre tells his sister, full of surprise, when he first encounters the Dutch snow drizzling down. In The Netherlands, Pierre and his family are able to build a new life for themselves, and Pierre considers this country his home. Here, he is able to dream again and create a new future for himself.

In the years between leaving Rwanda and finding a permanent home in The Netherlands, Pierre discovers that the football field is the place he is allowed to breathe again. The pitch brings him peace of mind and it is the place where he finds common ground with his Dutch peers.

Full of talent

Soon after Pierre joins his first football club, it becomes clear that he is a talented player. At the age of 10, he is contracted to play for the Youth Academy at FC Groningen. Over a year later, at 12 years old, his swift development is rewarded, as he is promoted to the U14 team early. He is also included in the pre-selection of the Dutch National Team U15.

In the later years of his time with FC Groningen, Pierre wins some prestigious prizes, amongst which the championship of the famous Euro Football tournament in 2010.

Unfortunately, Pierre’s past catches up to him, and he is badly injured. Tortured by the trauma’s from his early childhood, he is unable to play his beloved sport anymore. His dream is crushed. His time with FC Groningen ends, with him as a U19 player.

The way up

Pierre recovers from his injury, and in 2011 he joins Be Quick 1887 in Haren (Groningen). Led by trainer Marcel Groninger, Pierre is the engine on the midfield and that year Be Quick is promoted to the Topklasse. Driven by his football ambitions, Pierre decides to try his luck abroad: he will play football in Atlanta, USA.

The American Dream

In the United States, Pierre plays for the Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies. Besides successes on the pitch, he studies hard and obtains his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. With the GGC Grizzlies Pierre wins 2 championships in 3 years(2014, 2016).  It is during this period of time in his life that Pierre learns a lot about himself and decides upon his definite chief aim in life. This becomes his driving force, and his football career is in full swing. He interns at different clubs, amongst which FC Atlanta United (USA) en CS Concordia Chiajna (Romania). Finally, Pierre signs a contract with the Romanian professional club Progresul Spartac.

In 2019 Pierre decides to return to The Netherlands, in a bid to develop himself further both on the pitch as well as off it. His current club is HZVV.
